National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a public-private campaign led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA).
The campaign reminds everyone from students to companies, that sound cybersecurity starts with simple habits.
In our connected world today, cybersecurity affects every part of our lives from banking online to social media and school accounts. Hackers and scammers routinely target individuals with poor passwords or outdated software.
Being safe online protects your identity, data, and privacy.
These are CISA's core practices that everyone should follow:
Use strong passwords and a password manager
Utilize a minimum of 12 characters in a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Consider a solid manager like Bitwarden or 1Password to keep them.
Activate multifactor authentication (MFA)
Provides an additional layer of protection even if another person obtains your password.
Find out more from CISA's MFA guide.
Identify and report phishing
Be wary of unexpected emails or texts asking for personal data.
Google's phishing quiz is a great method to practice.
Keep your software updated
Regular updates patch security vulnerabilities hackers exploit.
Turn on automatic updates for your computer and phone.
